Repairing Cracks Before They Spread

The Leadership Work Few Notice (Until It’s Missing)

Every building inspector knows cracks never stay small. The same is true in leadership. Tiny tensions, overlooked conflicts, and unspoken frustrations widen until they become full-blown fractures. Second Chair leaders are uniquely positioned to notice them first. A clarifying conversation. A moment of mediation between two staff members who don’t see eye-to-eye. These are the “repairs” that prevent relational collapse later. Avoiding them feels easier in the short term, but the cost multiplies. A leader’s willingness to address cracks early is what keeps a team from facing structural damage.

Ask Yourself:

If you’re a Second Chair:

- Where am I noticing “hairline fractures” in the team that need attention?

- Am I stepping in gently to clarify, encourage, or mediate where needed?

If you’re a First Chair:

- Am I creating space for issues to surface before they become crises?

- Do I model healthy conflict resolution in front of my team?

Healthy teams don’t avoid conflict. They repair it quickly, before the cracks spread.
