If Everyone Owns It, No One Does

The Problem

Work isn’t getting dropped because your team doesn’t care. It’s getting dropped because no one is sure who’s responsible.

They hear:
- “We’re all on this.”
- “This is a team priority.”

Then:
- No follow-up
- No urgency
- No ownership

Things don’t fail loudly. They stall quietly.

The Why:
Responsibility breaks down when it’s shared. This is a known behavioral pattern often called Diffusion of Responsibility. When multiple people are assigned, each person assumes someone else will carry it.

Result:
- Delayed action
- Weaker urgency
- Lower follow-through

When:
Early May. When calendars are full.

The Insight

Ownership is not about control. It’s about clarity.

Application

For each priority, define:
- Owner
- Outcome
- Deadline

Ask Yourself

- Where have I assigned ownership to a group instead of a person?
- What is currently “owned by everyone”?
- Who needs to clearly own it this week?
